Medals – a means of further research

“A Hook on which to hang history”

Johan LOUW was our speaker in April and held his audience enthralled as he talked about medals that he has in his collection and the research that he has done into the history of the recipients.

Medal collectors are interested not only in the medal itself but the circumstances that led to the awarding of the medal. This in turn leads to an exploration of the historical period in which the medal was awarded.

He illustrated his talk by referring to the medals acquired by three members of one family, the TRAILL-SMITHS,a father, son and daughter closely connected with Cape Town.

He not only bought their medals but rescued all their papers from the rubbish dump.

After his talk, Johan identified some of the medals members had brought.

Johan (0217128882) will mount medals and supply ribbon.
