I am looking for information on the Luit Meier who died in in explosion at Swellendam in 1808.
Gen Janssens himself took personal responsibility for the eight young Meier children.
But surely he did not raise them himself?
I suspect that they were placed (uitgeplaas) with community members.
It is also known that the Kerkraad of the NG Kerk Swellendam paid “alimentasie” to these children.
Alimentasie is a sum of money paid by the Kerkraad in cases of severe need.
It is not known what happened to the children’s mother or what her surname was.
In those years the wife went by her own/maiden name and did not take the husband’s name.
The first names of Luit Meier and his children are unknown.
The NG Kerk Archives is researching this matter for me, but should any of your members have information available, I would appreciate hearing from them.
- May you experience a Blessed Christmas season!
