Reading and Restoring Grave Stones

READING AND RESTORING GRAVESTONES

SO OFTEN, WHEN EXPLORING GRAVEYARDS AND READING ‘STONES’, WE ARE CONFRONTED BY PROBLEMS RELATING TO UNDERSTANDING MUCH DESTROYED OR VANDELISED GRAVESTONES.

MERRY DEWAR WRITES:

“This might seem a bit remote, but here are two website addresses that discuss how to make illegible gravestones more legible – filling the depressiosn with shaving foam and chalk, often recommended, are apparently both no-no’s. Using a mirror or torch to direct light at an angle is apparently preferred, being non-invasive. I wish I’d thought of this when I was in Devon, hunting gr gr grandfather among the lichen!
Otherwise, perhaps the use of torches or mirrors could be mentioned on the website as a useful tip?”
