Numbering Systems

THE DE VILLIERS NUMBERING SYSTEM

A short introduction to SA Genealogy, to encourage people to construct their tree based on
the de Villiers numbering system which is very simple, with simplified the symbols. Designed so anyone should be able to prepare a tree without the need of highly sophisticated systems. To illustrate the procedures we list one little tree which builds onto the BASSON family. The thing about trees is that it can attract a lot of people because so many surnames get introduced.

[If you want your tree listed on this site, Lois has offered to edit them so they all have the same format.]

South African Genealogy

South African Genealogies (Suid-Afrikaanse Geslagregisters), published initially by the Human Sciences Research Council and more recently by Genealogical Institute of South Africa, provide an invaluable guide to many South African families, particularly those who belonged to the Dutch Reformed Church or the Lutheran Church. Currently there are 14 volumes available, the 14 volume being Va to Vir.
Understandably, there are mistakes in some of the genealogical tables provided, and many family researchers have researched more recent generations than those covered in the volumes. The Genealogical Institute encourages people to send them corrections and additions. However, this website can also make such information available if researchers would like to pass on their information to us.
The volumes use a system of genealogical numbering introduced in the nineteenth century by C C de Villiers and this system is widely used in South Africa for immigrant families. In this system, the first progenitor who came to this country is labeled “a”, his offspring as “b1”, “b2” etc., the third generations as “c” and so it goes on.

Abbreviations commonly used are: * born; ~ baptized; x married; xx second marriage;
÷ divorced; + died; # buried; c about; dg daughter; sn son.
