Wheatley

I’m looking for members of a WHEATLEY family, who lived in Wynberg (and
nearby areas, like Newlands, Athlone, etc.). Specifically, I’m trying to
trace:

Alfred Joseph WHEATLEY, who was a corporal in the 1st African Mounted Rifles
in 1915, who later became a Lieutenant in the 2nd South African Infantry &
Machine Gun Corps in France (trained in Grantham, England). He appears to
have also fought in the SA Rebellion, and in East Africa, and was given the
following medals, British War Medal, Victory Medal, and the Silver War
Badge.

Robert Wynne WHEATLEY (son of the above, born 27 May 1907), educated at SAC,
Cape Town (and possibly boarding school in Kroonstad). Robert went to
Britain in 1927 to study engineering, and returned to Cape Town in 1930, as
an “agent”, the ship’s manifest. I have attached a photograph of him taken
in 1930. He may have been associated with the Athlone Hotel in the early
1960s, as he held the liquor license.

I have attached a small poster, which I would be very grateful if you could
pin up (if you do have a noticeboard at your event), in the hope that one of
your attendees might be interested or see a connection.

Thanks & best wishes,

John Wynne
